Willette's cartoons of various characters included a Cantiniere that doubled as a comic editorial character and Marianne, the symbol of France. The character started in the late 1880s in the French magazine Le Pierrot.
In 1901 she was featured on the cover of Le Rire as an 1860s Turco Cantiniere.
These remind me a bit of Leroy Neiman's "Femlins" from Playboy magazine.
Toward World War One the character became an earthy but patriotic symbol of France.
I have no explanation for this one.....
Maybe this last image did any reference to "La Liberté guidant le peuple" from Delacroix
ReplyDeleteThe "Nursing" Cantiniere? Could be. Thank you.
