Paul, you are right. It is confusing. I just made "Jim" a simple rustic who was too confused to speak up.
ReplyDeleteSometimes the gag was on a friend of a man in ranks, then the others in rank would join in. The story is either in Bell Irvin Wiley's Life of Billy Yank or Life of Johnny Reb books.
