First Men In The Moon..Missing Scenes?

I came across these publicity stills from the fun Victorian Sci-Fi movie The First Men In The Moon. Martha Hyer didn't look like this in the United States released version. Can any folks in the UK or Europe remember if there was a "European Version" with more "skin?"

One French poster promised bare arms and legs.

The US audience did get to see Martha Hyer's drawers in the zero-gravity scene.

ARMIES IN PLASTIC "Butternut" Confederates

I got one box of set # 5461 by mistake and took it to The Hobby Bunker to exchange it when I discovered that AIP's set 5412 of Confederates is the same shade of "butternut" as the later set. Now I'm building a couple of small units using the kepi heads from the 5461 set on the bodies of the 5412 set. The early set of Confederate figures is an excellent set for building a firing line with 6 loading and firing poses making 12 figures per box. 2 boxes make a respectable tabletop unit with one of the officers from set 5412 and 5461.

A tip on grafting heads on the softer AIP plastic used in newer sets.  Start holes with a small nail held over a candle. (Kids ask your parents!) Then push the 1/16 plastic rod into the head hole and position it in the neck hole. Zap-A-Gap works as an adhesive. Head to shoulder joins can be made to blend in without painting.

 The hole nail insertion prevents the softer AIP plastic from splitting when a drill might.

War Game Figures in lingerie.

I'm not a wargamer. I have painted several 100 wargame figures over the years but sold them off during various periods of unemployment. I've only pushed figures around a couple of times and THAT was waaaaay back in the 1970s! I do like the various character figures and when I see Wild West, Pulp, Horror, and Victorian ranges, I get a kick out of the various female lingerie figures. What do you gamers do with them? How far do they move on a roll? Moral points?

Replicant's US Marines!

I hate to tell you what I paid for 4 sets of 6 figures each but they are fun figures. The US Marine set was made to go with Replicants's  Harper's Ferry Playset. I take exception that most period images show the U.S. Marines in greatcoats or shell jackets and wearing the wheel cap forage cap similar to the Mexican War. The good part is that Replicant's U.S. Marines are good for the Civil War. You could mass these figures in company fronts but they look good attacking Fort Fisher in North Carolina or skimishing on a coastal raid on Confederate salt works in Florida.

This figure above holds his weapon in the "prime" position but is reaching for a cartridge. The pose is forgivable as he's probably past the "load in nine times" training and is keeping his weapon out of the sand or water.

These figures come in a light blue plastic that does have some contamination and discoloration. I gave them a coat of dark blue acrylic.

Now if some company would make Civil War sailors on a landing raid! Blue, Gray or white plastic please.

Civil War Movie Ladies Underwear

The latest series of Civil War movies since the 1990s have been pretty sexless with a few exceptions. Gettysburg and Glory were sausage fests while Gods and Generals only had Kali Rocha as Mrs. Jackson. Earlier films have injected some "sex" by use of the obligatory lingerie scene. The wardrobe department usually got the 1860s underwear wrong either by making it too "foofy", comical, or trying to make it look like modern lingerie.

Gone with the Wind made the clothing look funny but was close.

You have to give the wardrobe dept. credit for giving Vivian Leigh drawers in a scene where they were not seen.

Tap Roots with Susan Hayward and Julie London went for humor and over did the decorations.

Rain Tree County went the way of making Elizabeth Taylor's costume look like modern corsetry.

The Horse Soldiers had Constance Tower in a similar fitted top.

You had Senta Berger's 1960s slip/chemise in Major Dundee.

Jewell looked pretty good in Ride With The Devil but her World War One era chemise needed some sleeves.

As did Jody Foster in Sommersby.

This outfit was plan ugly in Little Women.

Former dancer Mary Tyler Moore was great as the "pleasingly plump" Mary Lincoln but why is Mrs. Keckly sewing stuff onto her hoopskirt?

The North and The South featured underwear that came from "Holly's of Fredericksburg" as the joke went among reenactors back when this mini-series came out.

Patrick Swayze's slutty sister in the series sported black and red lingerie in different scenes as well. A sure sign that she was EVIL.

Natalie Portman's poor farm woman chemise was good in Cold Mountain.

I don't think Cameron Diaz wasn't wearing much more that a chemise in Gangs of New York.
